A Chrome Fun Zone For Kids – Part 2

Every now and then I like to search new extensions at the Chrome Store. Today it was all about children apps, and I’m not happy to report that not only many extensions not worth a mention but also should not be at the store in the first place.

I would expect from a chrome extension, at least for kids, to give a widescreen experience, clean layout, zero advertising, and lovely graphics. Is that too much to ask? Apparently yes. Most of the extensions are plain links that take you to games full with advertisements, and I can’t find a logical explanation of why would anyone use them. Having said that, there are extensions worth downloading right away, if you have kids.

Pictico – A large coloring book for kids at the age of 2 to 5 (Pictico says it is for all ages, but this is too easy for older kids). Not much to explain here, just download the extension, pick a favorite coloring page fromthe  many pictures Pictico have, and start coloring. You can actually simply click here and skip the download, but if you want to have it on your Chrome desktop, it is best to download the shortcut. There’s also an option to log into Facebook or Google in order to save your kid artwork, but I’m not sure why kids application at this age need this option.

An Awesome Book, is an online book written by Dallas Clayton and translated into 17 languages. This online version looks similar to any book, and allows kids to click on the text to hear Dallas read the book with a few sound effects, too. A bit shame there is no iPad version of this book. It is truly wonderful and magical.

Cyberkidz is a colorful playground designed for toddlers (1-2 years), and suitable for any language. The app contains 5 games that help kids to learn shapes, colors, animals, and more. If you have an Android device, you can also download their app from the Google play store. I didn’t liked much the graphics, but I’m sure kids would love the colorful characters, and games.

Although Ookicookie is a small extension that opens the game in an old fashioned way, I love it! Kids can open the game and focus on just it with no distraction. It has 20 exciting levels which means your kids are in for a nice journey of fun and joy.

I’d be very surprised if you don’t  know Cut The Rope already, but either way, it is a great game to have on your desktop as well as on your iPhone or iPad, and play whenever you have some free time. This game is definitely suitable for people of all ages! The reason why I’m in favor of this game and not Angrybirds through extension, is the Facebook connection that is a must when it comes to Angrybirds.

Unless you’ve lived under a rock, no way you have kids and never heard about friv.com.. It is the most successful gaming website for years now, with extremely simple navigation, and what seems to be a safe environment – Kids absolutely love it. So yes, again, this is just a link to the website, but this extension makes it easy to save the game on your desktop.

The screenshot says it all..
